Clothing
and silk
- Cotton
and silk are the major materials of the weaving industry in Thailand.
Thai fabrics have a great number of designs, usually distinguished
by region. Northern women have been considered very skillful weavers.
Woodcraft
and carvings - The
northern parts of Thailand are famous for the fine workmanship and designs.
As in all parts of the country, Buddhism, tinged with Hindu and animist
elements, is a major motif of the handicraft arts.
Leatherware
- For almost a thousand years leathersmiths have practiced their craft
in Chiang Mai. These leather goods and the styles distinguish it from
the leatherwork of the South and Central regions.
Pewter
& silver
- A long tradition of working silver and the styles, particularly the
floral and flame patterns, Buddhist images, and mythical figures, make
a the resulting products distinctively northern Thai.
